About the Collection

Frances Brody's Kate Shackleton Mysteries combine historical crime fiction, atmospheric Yorkshire settings and intricate investigations. Kate is a former wartime nurse and amateur detective who becomes involved in cases that take her through close-knit communities, country estates, libraries, schools and other distinctive settings. Macmillan describes the series as featuring Kate as an investigator for women in the English countryside, while the books are set against the social atmosphere of post-First World War England.

Dying in the Wool introduces Kate Shackleton as she investigates the disappearance of a mill owner in a Yorkshire village, uncovering secrets connected to the past.

A Medal for Murder follows another investigation involving murder and hidden motives as Kate puts her investigative skills to work.

Murder in the Afternoon brings Kate into a case involving a suspicious death and a family with secrets to uncover.

A Woman Unknown takes the investigation to Leeds, where Kate becomes involved in a mystery surrounding an unidentified woman.

Murder on a Summer's Day moves the action to Bolton Abbey, where a seemingly peaceful summer setting becomes the backdrop to murder.

Death of an Avid Reader takes Kate into the world of books and publishing when a prominent author dies under suspicious circumstances.

A Death in the Dales sends Kate to the Yorkshire Dales, where a woman's death at the bottom of a cliff raises questions about whether what first appears to be an accident was actually murder.

Why This Set Works

This collection contains Books 1–7 of the Kate Shackleton series, making it a strong starting point for readers who want to follow Kate's investigations in publication order. The novels combine historical mystery with Yorkshire locations, period atmosphere, character-driven investigations and traditional detective storytelling.

Important: This is a 7-book collection from the series, not the complete Kate Shackleton series. Later books continue Kate's investigations, with the series extending beyond these seven novels.

Perfect For

Perfect for: Frances Brody readers • Kate Shackleton fans • historical mystery readers • cozy mystery enthusiasts • British crime fiction • amateur detective stories • Yorkshire settings • period mysteries • Agatha Christie fans • Jacqueline Winspear readers • home libraries • mystery collections • thoughtful gifts for crime-fiction readers

Store owner replied: Hi Toni! We aim to find special collections! So glad you found us. These are published by a friend who owns a large company abroad! His books are lovely:-) They also have a paperback version I believe... So happy you are happy!

My experience with The Reading Spa was nothing but pleasurable. I ordered the Avatar book set as a gift for my partners birthday. I sent en email to check on shipping and arrival time to see if they could send it out before his birthday. They got back to me right away, said they would send it out as soon as they could, and were very friendly to converse with. There was one book missing that they addressed in our email exchange that hadn’t arrived for them yet. They took the time to send what was there so I could present the gift, and as soon as the other book arrived for them they sent it out immediately. I was able to present my gift on time, and my partner was so thrilled with it all thanks to them. I couldn’t recommend this place more!
