A selection of dazzling short stories which celebrate the talent and achievements of nine women writers who, each in their own way, broke new ground through their literary innovation, activism and beliefs.

Standing Her Ground showcases women who were not afraid to let their imaginations fly or to challenge the status quo; Elizabeth Gaskell and Edith Wharton create gripping narratives about marriage and commitment, Virginia Woolf satirizes the grandiose claims of men, and Willa Cather movingly examines what it is to be different. Together with stories about independence, growing older and longing, here is a showcase of classic short story writing, spanning one hundred years.

Featuring short stories written by Virginia Woolf, Mary Shelley, Elizabeth Gaskell, Willa Cather, Edith Wharton, Kate Chopin, Katherine Mansfield, Winifred Holtby and Alice Dunbar Nelson.
